The Ceremony for the Foundation of Digitalpark
The ceremony for the foundation of Digitalpark which is a joint project of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University and Turkish-German University, was conducted on Tuesday, July 7th.
The foundations of the first two blocks of Digitalpark, which is going to be built on a total area of 50,000 m2, including 45,000 m2 in the district of Çekmeköy, Istanbul and 5,000 m2 in the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University Campus in Rize, were laid at the ceremony with the participation of the Minister of Industry and Technology, Mustafa Varank on Tuesday, 7 July. Besides Mr. Varank, Turkish-German University (TAU) rector; Prof. Dr. Halil Akkanat, the rector of Recep Tayyip Erdogan University (RTEU); Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Karaman, the president of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University Development Foundation and chairman of the Board of Digital Park Nusret Bayraktar, and the general manager of the Digitalpark Prof. Dr. Tahsin Engin were also present at the ceremony.
A New Structure
Mr. Akkanat mentioned the expectation that universities need to develop solutions to the problems of practice by using their experiences and said “If technoparks wish academicians with R&D abilities and product development capacities to operate at technoparks, a new structure should be established with the help of legislative changes which render this possible, and it would be the most appropriate approach to make interventions which will eliminate the separation between universities and the field.’’
After Mr. Akkanat’ speech, Mr. Karaman (rector of RTEU) mentioned the importance and contribution of the idea of establishing a joint technopark with Turkish-German University in Istanbul by adding that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University has made significant progress in terms of its physical infrastructure, academic staff, education quality, academic performance and success in its 15th year of establishment.
Investment with Four Thousand Research and Development (R&D) Staff
The last speech of the ceremony was delivered by Mr. Varank. He said that as the Ministry, they help the creation of an ecosystem which includes research and development, entrepreneurial culture and qualified employment with technoparks. He also said, "I believe from the bottom of my heart that our technopark, of which we laid the foundations today, will strengthen our universities to become entrepreneurial and innovative universities.’’ Mr. Varank added ‘’when it expands to its full capacity with its campuses in Istanbul and Rize, are talking about an important investment which is going to host 300 entrepreneurs and employ four thousand full-time research and development personnel. I wish good luck.’’
A Critical Role in Target Development
Mr. Varank stated that they had provided a grant of approximately 15 million TL to the construction of the infrastructure, administration building, and the incubation centre of Digitalpark Technocity, and that they would continue to support it in the following years. He also added that it would play a critical role in attaining the development goals of their country with its competitive and domestic high-tech products not only on a national scale, but also on a global scale.
