Prime Minister Mehmet Şimşek at the Turkish-German University
On 20th October 2017, Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Şimşek gave a presentation on "Current Economic Developments in Turkey and in the World" at Turkish-German University (TGU).

The Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) shared his views on the short and long-term problems of the global economy after he stated that he was delighted to be present at the TGU for his speech and that he would continue to give his best support to our university .

After describing recent developments in the global economy, Mr. Şimşek made assessments about the Turkish economy by indicating that although it passes through a very difficult period due to a treacherous coup attempt, terrorism and geopolitical problems, Turkey has recovered quickly and after that, the Turkish economy exhibited a good performance.
 
DPM Şimşek pointed out that despite all problems that occurred in 2016, economic growth in Turkey was 3,2 percent and it is expected that it would be 5,5 percent in 2018 with increasing employment, investments and export performance.
 
Şimşek also highlighted that structural reforms are a prerequisite for sustaining the rising trend of the Turkish economy and education is the most important among structural reforms. He added that increasing the quality of access to education and the quality of education are most important factors to strengthen the economy.
Research and Projects in the Department of Economics
Dr. Semih Emre Çekin has a forthcoming article, titled “Inflation Targeting, Fiscal Policy and The Exchange Rate Regime” in Emerging Markets Finance & Trade.
 
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Nuroğlu, the head of the Department of Economics, has co-authored the article “Transaction Cost Theory to Examine IT Impact on the Governance of Franchise Networks” presented at V. Anadolu International Conference in Economics, May 11-13, 2017, Eskişehir, Turkey.
 
Another study of Dr. Elif Nuroğlu, titled “Returns to Innovation and Growth: A Panel Data Analysis of Middle Income Countries”, co-authored with Dr. Çiydem Çatak, was also presented at V. Ana-dolu International Conference in Economics, May 11-13, 2017, Eskişehir, Turkey.

The EU Economy in a State of Transition

On 19 December 2017 Dr. S. Emre Çekin gave a presentation on the topic “The EU Economy in a State of Transition: The Euro Crisis and the Increasing Influence of Germany”. In his analysis, which deals with economic, political and geopolitical issues, Dr. Çekin asserts that after 2008, the EU went through a transition period where events such as the Euro crisis, the migrant crisis and geopolitical events shaped the economic and political environment. He also indicated that during this period, Germany has emerged as the most influential actor in European politics .
 
Economics Department of the TGU Meets the Professors from the Partner University of Hohenheim











 

On 15th February 2018 academic staff of the Economics department held a workshop with Prof. Dr. Michael Ahlheim and Prof. Dr. Andreas Pyka from the University of Hohenheim, TGU’s partner university.


Following the visit to TGU’s Rector, the participants had a meeting at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. In the meeting, specifics regarding teaching duties in the Economics program were presented and discussed. Following this, Prof. Dr. Michael Ahlheim gave a presentation on the topic “Economic Environmental Assessment” after which possibilities of future research collaborations with the Economics Department of TGU were discussed.
 
Conference on 'The Transformation to Knowledge-based Bioeconomy'

During their visit to the TGU, Prof. Dr. Andreas Pyka, who is the coordinator of the Department of Economics at the TGU, gave a lecture on the topic “The Transformation to Knowledge-based Bioeconomy”. Future students of the Economics Department, academic staff and interested participants attended the lecture. After the lecture, Prof. Dr. Pyka and Prof. Dr. Ahlheim briefly gave advice to prospective Economics students about the best ways to study economics.
 
New Member of the Department of Economics 

Dr. Levent Yılmaz (http://www.tau.edu.tr/profil/levent_yilmaz/), the new long-term professor for the MA in International Finance program, has joined the Department of Economics at TGU in October 2017. His fields of teaching and research specialization are Personnel and Organizational Economics, Public Economics, Educational Economics, Child Development, Behavioral Economics, Game Theory, Empirical and Experimental Economics. 
Department of Economics Accepts its First Students
The Economics Department of TGU accepted its first students with the University Entrance Examination in July 2017. In their first year, the 41 Students who were accepted are learning German in the Foreign Languages School on campus. Once in two weeks, the future Economics students also take lessons from the academic staff of the Economics Department and prepare for Economics courses next year.
Those who pass the “German Language Examination for University Entrance” (DSH) will embark on studying Economics in Winter 2018.
At the start of the Winter semester 2017/18, the academic staff of the Economics Department and future Economics students met. In this meeting the Department presented itself and a mini Economics lecture was given by Dr. Alexander Dreyer and Dr. S. Emre Çekin.
 
How Smart Machines will Affect Our Life

Head of Economics Department, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Nuroğlu joined live broadcast at a major TV channel in February 2018. She answered questions about the 4th Industrial Revolution, Turkey’s current position and its future prospects.


She underlined that the 4th Industrial Revolution is both a threat as well as an opportunity for Turkey.
On the one hand, there is severe competition in the world, and countries that create knowledge and technology initially will become dominant power in the global economy. On the other hand, it is an opportunity for Turkey to get rid of the middle-income trap and to place itself among the ten biggest economies in the world. She warned that there is no luxury of ignoring this fundamental change in the industry if Turkey wants to be one of the strong economies.
 
Academic Summit I - Money and Growth

On 13 October 2017, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Prof Dr. Aykut Kibritçioğlu attended "the Academic Summit I - Money and Growth" as a keynote speaker alongside with Prof. Dr. Fatih Özatay and Prof. Dr. Celal N. Küçüker. Prof. Kibritçioğlu made a presentation about “The Impacts of Monetary Policies on Long-term Economic Growth”. 

II. European Congress on Economic Issues- ECOEI

Acting Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Prof Dr. Aykut Kibritçioğlu attended II. European Congress on Economic Issues- ECOEI as a keynote speaker on 16 November 2017. Prof. Kibritçioğlu made a presentation about “Why becoming a good economist is so hard?”. Dr. Elif Nuroğlu also participated in the congress with the article “A comparative Analysis of Turkey's and Germany's Exports and FDI's in the Balkans” and Dr. S. Emre Çekin presented an article titled “All Equal Before the Environmental Kuznets Curve? New Evidence from a Time-Varying Parameter Approach” in the congress. Research Associate Zehra Çankaya Bayraklı also made a presentation on the comparison of Nakshidil Valide Sultan foundations with Waqfiyyas in economic and financial terms.

 
Determining Financing Subsidies of Systemically Important Financial Institutions (SIFI) by Examining Bond Spreads

Prof. Dr. Hasan Doluca (Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg) gave a presentation at TGU titled ”Determining Financing Subsidies of Systemically Important Financial Institutions (SIFI) by Examining Bond Spreads” in March 2018.


In his study, Prof. Doluca analyzes financial advantages that large financial institutions get for being systemically important by focusing on the impact of systemic risks of the institutions on bonds they issue. The findings indicate that additional systemic importance leads to financing advantage in terms of bond yields.
