Earthquake Early Warning System Meeting Held at Our University

On August 28, 2024, our University held the “3rd Regular Academic Advisory and Consultation Board Meeting organized within the scope of the Project for Establishing Earthquake Early Warning Systems in Turkey and Providing Signals to Citizens” with the participation of our Rector Prof. Dr. Cemal Yıldız. Our Rector noted in the meeting that it was a source of pride for our University to host such significant projects and underlined the support they provide for scientific collaborations and earthquake safety projects. Furthermore, he stated that our University’s research infrastructure is always ready to support the project.
Chairing the meeting, Academic Advisory Board Chairman Prof. Dr. Şerif Barış (Kocaeli University) shared the development of earthquake early warning systems in Turkey as well as the steps to be taken in the future. Prof. Dr. Barış stated that the pilot projects carried out in industrial facilities and large structures were successful and emphasized that these systems should be expanded. He also drew attention to the fact that the project concentrated on international collaborations and the importance of visits to integrate systems in countries such as Mexico, the USA and Italy into Turkey.
The meeting was moderated by Academic Advisory Board Secretary General Lecturer Süleyman Çeven (Düzce University), who provided information about the technical progress of the project. Lecturer Çeven summarized the work on the installation of earthquake early warning systems and raising public awareness.
Representatives of institutions and companies such as Emlak Konut GYO, Allianz Teknik and Multitek participated in the meeting. The institution representatives provided technical support for the project and shared their contributions to the integration of earthquake early warning systems into industrial and public living spaces.
At the end of the meeting, it was stressed that earthquake early warning systems should be disseminated throughout Turkey and legal regulations regarding signal sharing with the public should be accelerated.
