30.05.2025

The first of the Science Café event series, which was implemented by the Science Communication Office established within the Communication Coordination Office of our University, was organized at Yücel Çelikbilek Cultural Center on May 30, 2025. The program, which was attended by our Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Aysel Uzuntaş and our Secretary General Özgür Ali Şirin, was moderated by our Culture and Communication Sciences Department Faculty Member Dr. Lecturer Dilara Tekrin.

At the event, our Faculty of Culture and Social Sciences, Department of Culture and Communication Sciences, Associate Professor Dr. Ayşe Elif Posos Devrani shared her research titled "Parenting in the Digital Age" with the participants. Speaking within the scope of the program, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Elif Posos Devrani said, “The research we conducted with 1000 parents of children between the ages of 0-6 shows that the majority of children are introduced to technological devices before they are over 2 or turn 3. While 44.6 percent of parents see the Internet as a resource that makes the parenting process easier, 25.6 percent are concerned about addiction and negative effects on development. In terms of media literacy, parents' familiarity with internet terms is limited, and awareness of concepts such as digital inequality, digital citizenship and digital literacy is not high. In sharing parenting behavior (sharenting), it is noteworthy that there is little awareness of the child's digital privacy. The rate of parents who think they have the authority to share the content they want about their child is seen as 67%.”

Following the presentation, the participants' questions were answered, and ideas were exchanged during the Q&A session. The Science Cafe event series, which aims to bring science closer to society and make academic knowledge accessible to everyone, is planned to continue with different themes.
