Culture, Migration and Communication Workshop

The workshop the title of which was “Kultur, Migration und Kommunikation” (Culture, Migration and Communication), and which was a joint event of the Faculty of Culture and Social Sciences of the Turkish-German University (TGU) and Heidelberg University, was held on March 31-April 1 at the SFL Conference Hall.
 
In the first session of the workshop the presentation language of which was German, there were four presentations that were moderated by Prof. Dr. B. Aykut Arıkan, the head of Cultural and Communication Sciences Department and Vice Rector at TGU. After TGU and Heidelberg University Faculty Member Dr. Valentin Rauer's paper on "Kulturkonzepte. Zur Diversität gruppenbezogener Referenzen", associate professor Ralph Buchenhorst from TGU gave a presentation titled “Interkulturalität im urbanen Raum: Zur Funktion und Symbolik des Eruvs”. 
Then, the joint paper titled “Konstruktive Interkulturalität. Paradigmen, Konzepte und Anwendungsfelder” by Prof. Dr. Christoph Barmeyer from Passau University and Prof. Dr. Ernst Struck from TGU followed by the presentation of Dr. Ertuğrul Şahin from Heidelberg University, the title of which was "(K)eine Heimat für Deutschtürken im transkulturellen Raum?", and the first session ended with the discussion section.
Campus Tour and Second Session

After lunch and TGU campus tour, the second session of the day began with TGU faculty member Dr. Detlev Quintern's presentation titled “Wissensgeschichte als inklusive Erinnerungskultur” and Prof Dr. Aysel Uzuntaş, the Director of the School of Foreign Languages at TGU and a faculty member at the Cultural and Communication Sciences Department, was the moderator.
Professor Dr. Henning Sievert's paper on "Arbeitsmigranten aus deutschsprachigen Raum in Diensten der osmanischen Regierung" was followed by the joint presentation titled “Buchbesprechung von Abdelmalek Sayad, Suering of the Immigrant“ and given by Dr. Detlev Quintern and research assistant Müşerref İrem İbişoğlu from TGU. After the discussion and the meeting after the three presentations in the second session, the first day of the workshop finished.
Second Day of the Workshop

The second day of the Culture, Migration and Communication Workshop started with three presentations moderated by Isabell Diekmann from Bielefeld University. After Prof. Dr. Hürrem Tezcan-Güntekin's paper titled "Demenz und Migration - Zur Notwendigkeit einer intersektionalen Perspektive in den Gesundheits- und Pflegewissenschaen" from Berlin Alice Salomon University, instructor Gülay Cedden from METU gave her presentation on “Kognitive Faktoren bei der Determinierung der Erwerbssequenz von Fremdsprachen: Warum Deutsch die erste Fremdsprache (L2) vor Englisch (L3) an türkischen Schulen sein sollte”. 
The last paper of the day titled “Zukunsperspektiven für Kulturvergleichende Psychologie” was jointly presented by Sümeyye Balcı and Süheyla Yılmaz who were scholarship holders by the Ministry of National Education, and then the discussion part of the discussion session began. 
The brainstorming session to develop scientific cooperation which was moderated by Prof. Dr. İlhan İlkılıç, the Dean of Faculty of Culture and Social Sciences at TGU, was completed with a summary presentation by Professor İlkılıç. The workshop ended with a visit to Beykoz Glass and Crystal Museum which is by TGU campus.
